The Legacy of 1888

Friday, August 18, 1989. An orange notice is pinned to the door of the Blackwood Villa: demolition begins September 1.

Leo, Maya, Oscar and Zoe refuse to accept it. Their headquarters is in the villa's cellar, and in the closed-off attic they suspect something no one has seen since 1888: the estate of Captain Gabriel Vance, who set out on a walk one November and never came back.

What they find leads them beneath the city. And Mr. Crane, who smiles so pleasantly that you'd better not believe a word he says, is right on their heels.
